MINI-LESSON:
- Attention Getter:
- Give each girl a heart shaped sugar cookie. Decorate them with pretty pink frosting and some pretty sprinkles. Don't say anything about them except that you wanted to share something with them that you really like from your heart. Tell them they can have as much as they would like....go ahead and feast on them. While they are eating visit with them about the first part of
"Read the Scriptures Daily". There are some other great ideas in this article that you may feel you want to do with your girls today. It will probably depend on the time that you have.
-
"Read the Scriptures Daily" by Laurel Rohlfing, The Friend, March 1991.
Now liken it to them eating their cookies. Tell them that just like they need to feed their body every day they should also feed their souls every day by reading their scriptures. Make all the different connections you can.
- Now tell them that there is something else that is more "Dear to your Heart". Then talk with them about feasting with all of their heart on their scriptures. Tell them how much you love your scriptures. Be sure and share your testimony with them. Talk about how important it is to feast upon the scriptures and to not just nibble or take one bite once in a while. Talk to them about how important it is when they are reading to mark their scriptures and write in the margin their feelings so that when they come across those scriptures they will be reminded of those feelings.
SCRIPTURE STICKER ACTIVITY:
Have all of the girls sit in a circle with their scriptures. Give them all a sheet of "Dear to my Heart" Scripture Stickers. Ask them if they have a favorite scripture. Take turns turning to their favorite scriptures and sharing them. You may want to start with your favorite scripture to give them time to think. Highlight the scriptures and put a heart scripture sticker on the page. Leave plenty of time for this part of the activity. If you feel that they are too young to choose a scripture -- you could have some chosen and mark them.
CONCLUSION:
"Read the scriptures daily" Print off the reading chart and give to each girl to take home. Explain that they will color in one number for each day that they read.
Give them some "Dear to my Heart" Scripture Stickers to take home. Explain that when they come across a scripture that they will want to remember they can mark it and put a sticker on that page just like you did today.
Sing a favorite closing song like "Scripture Power" or "I am a Child of God."
CLOSING PRAYER
REFRESHMENTS:
You will definitely want to serve heart everything you can get your hands on.
