Margaret D. Nadauld
Young Women General President
Fall 2002 Open House Message

Today I would like to talk to you about being a leader of Young Women. There are so many of you who could be a superb visual aid. I have thought of you as I prepared this message. Because you are the message. You are God's secret weapon against the adversary. When I think of you, The vast army of righteous Young Women leaders, I say to myself with Elisha, "Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them."

And so, for the few minutes we have together, I would like to try to encourage and inspire and remind you of all that you are and all that you can be in this important work of our Father in Heaven -- the glorious work of assisting parents to bring young women to Christ.

To begin with, I have four thought questions for you. They are serious questions and they are important. Please give them the greatest consideration as you contemplate an answer. (1) What is the desire of your heart for the young women you have been called to serve? Think about it very carefully. What is it that would bless her life the very most? What could you give to her that she would cherish and love forever

While you consider the first question, let me ask a second: (2) What is it that her parents most desire for their daughter?

Now before you answer too quickly, let me ask a third question: (3) What does our Heavenly Father most desire for each of His daughters? And question number four: (4) What does it mean to come unto Christ.

I hope that thinking about these questions will lead you to determine that surely one of the most important things we can do for a girl is to help her love the Lord and want to draw close to Him. Isn't this what a faithful parent would want for a daughter -- even more that popularity, good grades, dates? The handbook states that we are to assist parents to bring young women to Christ. Then surely we must help them love Him. I believe that it is just that simple. We must help her love Him, feel tender toward Him, be grateful for Him, honor Him, serve Him, love Him. When she really loves Him, she will love His church and all that it stands for and teaches and requires. She will begin developing a firm foundation of faith planted deep in her heart upon which she will build all the days of her life.

This would begin with her understanding that she really is a spirit daughter of God, our Eternal Heavenly Father and that our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, is His Son. We can help her know that Christ was sent by God our Father to show her the way to return home to Him. We can help her understand that He set the example for us to follow, that He sacrificed His very life, which was perfect in every way, to make it possible for her to come home again. He did this for her because He loves her so completely.

In some finite sense we may be able to help her understand about returning home from our mortal point of view. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland wrote about it: I see drama enacted at the airport regularly. I guess I have seen it a hundred times. I saw it [again] recently...

"It was obvious that a missionary was coming off a plane, because the whole airport was crawling with conspicious looking missionary relatives. There was a father who did not look particularly comfortable in a suit. He seemed to be a man of the soil, a man of the outdoors. He was tanned, had large, work-scarred hands. He wore a white shirt, that he probably did not choose to wear, except on Sundays.
"There was a mother, who was quite thin. She looked like she had worked very hard in her life. She had shredded tissue in her hands.
"There was a girl on the verge of cardiac arrest, and two or three little kids. The kids were sort of noisy and they were trying to keep them quiet.
"I rushed past and was headed for the gate. I thought, this is one of the great human dramas of all time. So I stopped to observe.
"The missionaries were getting off the same plane I had gotten off and I had seen half a dozen of them. They still had their tags on and were working on the stewardess.
"I wondered who would break first. I really thought that the girl would want to, but that might not be discreet. My guess was, from looking at that handkerchief, that the mother needed to do something to release the pressure. I really thought that it would be the little kids.
"I saw him coming down the stairs. He looked like Captain Moroni. Clean cut and handsome, he probably had known the work his father and mother had known, before he was a missionary, but he had his hair trimmed again and looked like he had a reasonably new coat.
"He started down off the steps and started across the apron towards that building. Then, indeed, somebody broke. It wasn't the mother. It wasn't the girlfriend. It wasn't the children.
"This big, slightly awkward, bronzed, scarred, giant of a man, put an elbow into an United Airlines attendant, and ran. Just ran out onto that apron. He grabbed that boy. I guess he could have crushed him. The missionary was about 6'2" or so, but this big bear of a man just grabbed him and held him.
"For the longest time nothing happened. It seemed like half an eternity went by. They just held each other. The boy dropped his briefcase and put a coat on top of it and they just hugged each other."

And the child returned home. Oh, how our Father wants us to come home again. What a remarkable trust He has placed in you to help His daughters along their path back to Him. This is your calling, your duty given to you from God through your priesthood leaders. Please help girls know how much Heavenly Father loves them and wants them back home again in heaven after successfully fulfilling their earthly mission. Teach them to love Him. Teach them of His love for them.

You can help young women gain a vision of this kind of love and an understanding of God's marvelous plan. It is true that "we love him because he first loved us" as John taught.

When a young woman understands what the Atonement is, she will begin to understand the love Heavenly Father and the Savior, Jesus Christ have for her. Think of the Savior who was willing to suffer for us. Even if you were the only person on this earth, He would have suffered and been crucified for you. President Hinckley helped us understand the atonememt better with this instructive story he shared with us:

"Years ago there was a little one-room schoolhouse in the mountains of Virginia where the boys were so rough that no teacher had been able to handle them.
"A young, inexperienced teacher applied, and the old director scanned him and asked: 'Young fellow, do you know that you are asking for an awful beating? Every teacher that we have had here for years has had to take one.'
"I will risk it,' he replied."
"The first day of school came, and the teacher appeared for duty. One big fellow named Tom whispered: 'I won't need any help with this one. I can lick him myself.'
"The teacher said, 'Good morning, boys, we have come to conduct school.' They yelled and made fun at the top of their voices. 'Now, I want a good school, but I confess that I do not know how unless you help me. Suppose we have a few rules. You tell me, and I will write them on the blackboard.'
"One fellow yelled, 'No stealing!' Another yelled, 'On time.' Finally, ten rules appeared on the blackboard.'
"'Now,' said the teacher, 'a law is not good unless there is a penalty attached. What shall we do with one who breaks the rules?'
"'Beat him across the back ten times without his coat on.' came the response from the class.
"'That is pretty severe, boys. Are you sure that you are ready to stand by it?' Another yelled, 'I second the motion,' and the teacher said, 'All right, we will live by them! Class, come to order!'
"In a day or so, 'Big Tom' found that his lunch had been stolen. The thief was located--a little hungry fellow, about ten years old. 'We have found the thief and he must be punished according to your rule--ten stripes across the back. Jim, come up here!' the teacher said.
"The little fellow, trembling, came up slowly with a big coat fastened up to his neck and pleaded, 'Teacher, you can lick me as hard as you like, but please, don't take my coat off!'
"'Take your coat off,' the teacher said. 'You helped make the rules!'
"'Oh, teacher, don't make me!' He began to unbutton, and what did the teacher see? The boy had no shirt on, and revealed a bony little crippled body.
"'How can I whip this child?' he thought. 'But I must, I must do something if I am to keep this school.' Everything was quiet as death.
"'How come you aren't wearing a shirt, Jim.?'
"'He replied, 'My father died and my mother is very poor. I have only one shirt and she is washing it today, and I wore my brother's big coat to keep me warm.'
"The teacher, with rod in hand, hesitated. Just then 'Big Tom' jumped to his feet and said, 'Teacher, if you don't object, I will take Jims licking for him.'
"'Very well, there is a certain law that one can become a substitute for another. Are you all agreed?'
"Off came Tom's coat, and after five strokes the rod broke! The teacher bowed his head in his hands and thought, 'How can I finish this awful task?' Then he heard the class sobbing, and what did he see? Little Jim had reached up and caught Tom with both arms around his neck. 'Tom, I'm sorry that I stole your lunch, but I was awful hungry. Tom, I will love you till I die for taking my licking for me! Yes, I will love you forever!'
"To lift a phrase from this simple story, Jesus, my Redeemer, has taken 'my licking for me' and yours for you."

Please help the young women know this with a testimony that sinks deep down into their hearts. The beautiful thing is that this love didn't end at Gethsemane or on Calvary. His love is available to guide us and help us each day, with every step along the way. He promised us this when He said: "For behold, this is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man."

You are an instrument in His hands. You have been called to help Him. You can receive inspiration to meet the needs of the girls in your care. You know this and have had experience with it. I hope you remember those times and find strength and encouragement from them. A stake leader shared such experience in a letter to our office:

"We have been very concerned with the modesty of our young women. We prayed and prayed to know what to do because it seems that what they are taught just goes in one ear and out the other and doesn't pierce their hearts. We had decided to ask a certain sister to come to our stake and talk because she had just given a devotional...that was right to the point and we felt our young women needed that.

"We contacted her to come, and she declined. She told us that she had received her message for the young women [she had responsibility for] and that we should present to our stake what we were inspired they needed to hear. We were quite taken back by this but nonetheless taught. So we went to work, and the experience that followed was phenomenal. I have never in my life felt the Lord use me as an instrument in His hands as strongly as this. We felt guided in every step. It was filled with beautiful music. We had a delightful night, and one that I KNOW was what the Lord wanted for the young women in [our stake] at this particular time. We CAN be inspired for our stake's needs...Just wanted to share that with you. It was a life changing experience for me."

Each Sunday we can invite His Spirit into the classroom. There is a wonderful scripture in Mosiah which applies to those of us who teach. In Chapter 23 verse 14 we are taught: "And also trust no one to be your teacher nor your minister, except he be a man of God, walking in his ways and keeping his commandments." This places a responsibility on each of us as a leader of God's daughters to be women of God. We must always walk in His ways and we must keep His commandments. We have to live the kind of exemplary life that a young woman can trust. We must be an example they can follow. Your life is your strongest, most powerful message. What you are and what you do teach more than your handouts, or visual aids, or even your words ever could. Paul taught this principle when he wrote: "Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?"

When you teach young women with the help of the Spirit and with your life as an example, the message will take root in their lives. Doctrine and Covenants section 42 verse 14 states: And the spirit shall be given unto you by the prayer of faith; and if ye receive not the Spirit ye shall not teach." To me that is saying that you will be given the Spirit of the Lord if you seek for it with faith, and it is not hard at all to access that Spirit. But, we are told that you will not be effective in your teaching without the Spirit of the Lord, for it truly is the Spirit that teaches. I also believe that this scripture is saying that unless we have sought for the Spirit of the Lord to guide us in our preparation and teaching that we probably shouldn't teach. I know with Nephi that when we "ask,...it shall be given unto you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you."

The purpose of Personal Progress is another means of bringing a young woman to Christ, adding to that foundation of faith. Personal Progress is just that. It is her personal journey of progress toward understanding and applying gospel principles, the values. It is a way to develop a pattern for growth. This does not happen in a few weeks or even months. It is a process that requires time and effort. Personal Progress includes parents in their daughter's spiritual foundation building during the teenage years.

With this vision in mind, you can know how to encourage Personal Progress in your ward/stake. Find ways to help them grow spiritually, to help them develop a testimony that will sink down into their hearts, to bless them and through them their families. You can know how this can best be done. Counsel with those involved, including the class presidencies. Listen. Think hard about it. Ponder. Pray for inspiration from Heaven. Find a quiet time and place for this so you can really listen for promptings that will come.

We all have a much greater chance for success when there is support in the home for church activity. Young Women leaders should always try to include parents, and you will be blessed and guided from on high as the Holy Ghost whispers impressions to your heart and mind. Seek for this inspiration, listen for it, then act on it. Last year a Young Women leader shared with me how this worked for her: A young girl who was not of our faith was attending Young Women. In a phone call to the girl's mother, the Young Women president invited her to come to New Beginnings to introduce her daughter, as we often do with new girls. The mother's response was to abruptly hang up on the leader without responding. But, when the night of the New Beginnings arrived, much to the surprise of this leader, the mother did come. That is the last I knew until just recently when I learned "the rest of the story." It is wonderful news! The daughter has been baptized and so has the mother! There was a lot that happened between the phone hang up and the waters of baptism, but this experience is a wonderful example of the importance of including parents, even when it feels intimidating.

There have been two recent notices sent to you through priesthood leaders. The first announced the theme for 2003 which is found in 2Nephi 31:20 "Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men." We hope that this theme can be useful to you in planning Mutual and special events such as youth conference and camp.

The second notice, dated September 3, 2002, is a help in planning meaningful Mutual night activities. This suggest ways to practice gospel principles taught in the Sunday lesson. As suggested in this notice and also in the wonderful new Guidebook for Parents and Leaders of Youth, Mutual should last 1 to 1 1/2 hours each week. Mutual should begin with opening exercises.

Recently I attended a Mutual which truly invited the Spirit of the Lord. It was conducted by the priest's assistant. He welcomed to Mutual a member of the bishopric who presided and sat on the stand. He gave the announcements which included asking everyone to return to the chapel 30 minutes later to practice for a song the bishop had asked the youth to sing in Sacrament meeting in 3 weeks. The opening prayer was given by a beehive, and then a Mia Maid played a violin solo, "Adoration," accompanied by her mother and a priest gave short talk. The music was wonderful. It was not flawless, but it invited the Spirit of the Lord in a very special way. The talk was a most humble sincere expression of this young man's love for the Savior. He shared an experience of the late Apostle Melvin J. Ballard and then concluded by reading the words of the hymn, "I Believe in Christ." He could barely read them because of the emotion and spirit that filled his soul. Everyone in the room was touched. If we had gone home right then, after only 12 minutes, it would have been so worth our coming.

The warm, sweet feeling that we all felt that night was the Spirit of the Lord. I hope that when everyone went to their activities, the adviser took just a moment at the beginning to help them identify that what they had just felt together in those sweet opening exercises was the Spirit of the Lord.

We often hear experiences of how a girl's testimony was strengthened by camp or large group performances such as a musical extravaganza or dance festival or roadshows. These large stake or multi-stake activities can be youth conference or part of it and add a major reinforcement to a girl's foundation of faith.

Dear sisters, dear friends, as our hour together nears an end, let us return to where we began: What is the desire of your heart for the young women you have been called to serve? What is it that her parents most desire for their daughter? What does our Heavenly Father most desire for each of His daughters -- including you? He asks that you love Him. Simply love Him. Come unto Christ. Draw close to Him as you pray and study the scriptures and live principled lives of integrity. Show by your actions, by your words and by your life that you truly do love Him. Bear your testimony often by your word. Bear you testimony always by your actions. We are taught so well by Matthew: "Wherefore, by their fruits ye shall know them".

I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the sacred and holy blessing that has been mine to serve with you to bless the lives of the young women of this Church. Please know of our love. Thank you for all you do. Like you, I love doing the work of our Father in Heaven and I know that He cares about what we are doing and how we are doing it. I know that He hears our prayers to Him as we seek His guidance. He answers our prayers. He has done so always as we have been on this holy errand to serve Him. He will do that for each one who comes to Him for guidance and direction. I love my Father in Heaven and His beloved Son, our Savior and Redeemer, the Lord Jesus Christ. I will honor and serve Him with all my heart all my days and be thankful for the privilege. We pray today and always that He will bless you.

In conclusion, I share with you an experience the youth shared in the Mutual opening exercises which I referred to earlier. It is just a small portion of the testimony of the late Apostle Melvin J. Ballard, grandfather of Elder M. Russell Ballard, which he bore to the First Presidency and the Council of the twelve in 1919, the day he was ordained an Apostle. Said he:

Two years ago, about this time, I had been on the Fort Peck Reservation for several days with the brethren, solving the problems connected with our work among the Lamanites. Many questions arose that we had to settle. There was no precedent for us to follow, and we just had to go to the Lord and tell Him our troubles, and get inspiriation and help from Him. On this occasion I had sought the Lord,...and that night I received a wonderful manifestation and impression which has never left me...I saw myself here with you. I was told there was another privilege that was to be mine; and I was led into a room where I was informed I was to meet someone. As I entered the room I saw, seated on a raised platform, the most glorious being I have ever conceived of, and was taken forward to be introduced to Him. As I approached He smiled, called my name, and stretched out His hands toward me. If I live to be a million years old I shall never forget that smile. He put His arms around me and kissed me, as He took me into His bosom, and He blessed me until my whole being was thrilled. As He finished I fell at His feet, and there saw the marks of the nails; and as I kissed them, with deep joy swelling through my whole being, I felt that I was in heaven indeed. The feeling that came to my heart then was: Oh! if I could live worthy, though it would require fourscore years, so that in the end when I have finished I could go into His presence and receive the feeling that I then had in His presence, I would give everything that I am or ever hope to be!"

In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
