YW Knowledge Activity
Hand-tinting with chalk pastels
WHAT DO WE WANT TO HAVE HAPPEN:
We want them to learn something new to add to their knowledge. The young women love to color and doodle on things. This will introduce them into a new world of coloring. It is a quick and easy process.
PREPARATION AND SUPPLIES NEEDED:
SPECIAL NOTE:
If you don't consider yourself crafty or artsy and are uneasy with teaching this process, we guarantee that there is someone in your ward who is. Invite them to teach the young women!! It will definitely be an assett to ANYONE to learn!! And tons of fun too!!
- Make an invitation for each girl. It would be great to purchase the
"Knowledge Girl" Stickers from DebaNae's at www.debanae.net and print off the knowledge template and make it into an invitation. That would get them excited!!
- Purchase a
Black and White Value Poster
(the knowlege one would be great for this activity) from DebaNae's at www.debanae.net for each girl. Bulk pricing is available on the web-site www.debanae.net.
- Have someone prepared to teach the chalking workshop.
- A box of pastels. (Or a couple of them if you have a large group) Or if you are planning on using the Knowledge poster only then you could purchase a few sticks of the colors you will need. (Green, flesh and dark pink or red)
- A can of Aerosol Hairspray. (spray the poster afterward to set the chalk)
- Have someone prepared to teach the mini-lesson.
- Refreshments. All kinds of green stuff you can find!! (some suggestions are included at the end of the activity)

MINI-LESSON:
Attention Getter:
- Read the quotation and scripture for the Value Knowledge.
"I will continually seek opportunities for learning and growth."
D&C 88:118: "Seek learning, even by study and also by faith."
- Prepare by reading this article in the New Era.
"The Discovery" New Era, Oct. 1988 - pg. 20-26 .
It has many wonderful examples of why we need to try new things. We will never know if we like it if we don't try. Pick out a few of the examples in the article to share that you think your young women will relate too. There are many of them.
- Visit with the girls about the activity that you are going to do tonight and how important it is to always seek opportunities for learning and for growth.
CHALKING ACTIVITY:
Give each young woman a poster and put the pastels on the table. Have the person asked to instruct them do so step by step. Detailed instructions can be found with the posters that you have received.
|
CONCLUSION:
After they are all finished with their posters, ask if any of them want to share their feelings about what they have learned. Ask if any of them look at or will look at art in a different way now. They might not want to be artists but they have more knowledge. Point out that they can use their new knowledge in their own lives. They will be amazed at how differently they will look at things.
Be sure and thank whoever taught the pastel activity for sharing her knowledge with you.
