When hiking, keep your food simple. Keep the preparation simple too. Here are some simple ideas for you to use:
- Warm a can of soup in the fire.
- A Sandwich (I love them on bagels) with fruit and veggies.
- Hot Dogs
- Trail Mix
- Granola Bars
- Jerky
- Package of Hot Chocolate
- Spread peanut butter on a banana.
Here are some of my favorite Trail Recipes:
- Tin Foil Dinners
Heavy Aluminum Foil
1 lb. ground beef, shaped into four patties
1 Medium Onion, chopped
2 large potatoes, sliced
2 large carrots, sliced
salt and pepper to taste
Lay 4 large sheets of oil on the picnic table. Place hamburger patty in the center of each. Add the other ingredients on top and salt and pepper. Bring the ends of the foil together and roll down firmly. Now fold the ends of the foil in. Place on outer edges of coals, turn occasionally, cook about 30 minutes.
- GORP
2 cups raisins
1 cup peanuts
1 cup almonds
2 cups granola
2 cups cheerios
2 cups chocolate chips
Mix all ingredients together put in baggies and it's ready to go!
- Bagel Sandwich:
1/2 cup peanut butter
1 banana
Sunflower Seeds
3 Bagels (cut in half)
Spread peanut butter on bagel. Slice pieces of banana and put on top of peanut butter. Sprinkle with sunflower seeds.
This is very nutritous and supplies a lot of energy on a hike.
- Granola Cereal:
Make this at home before you go.
6 cups rolled oats
1 cup unsweetened coconut
1 cup wheat germ
1 cup barley flakes
1 sunflower seeds
1 cup chopped nuts
1 cup wheat bran
1 cups raisins (add after cooked)
In a large bowl mix the above ingredients. In a microwave safe bowl, heat for 3 minutes on high the following ingredients:
1/4 cup canola oil
1 cup honey
1/2 cup water
2 tsp. almond extract
Pour the liquid over the dry mix. Stir until well mixed. Spread evenly over cookie sheets and bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes. Stir every 10 minutes. After cool add the raisins.
